What is it?: The Mummy Workout is a low impact, total body workout in an outdoor surrounding. The session is suitable for anyone to take part, but is primarily developed for women who have recently given birth and have not returned to full exercise since.
What does it involve?: Gentle warm-up exercises, followed by power walking (with buggies) interspersed with fat-burning and body toning exercises. Occasionally we will use equipment for exercises (such as small weights); these will be provided by the session instructor. We will finish off with a gentle warm-down and some stretching. Exercises can be tailored to meet all fitness levels, whether you’re a regular practitioner or have never exercised before.
What are the benefits?: The Mummy Workout allows you to safely regain your fitness after having a baby, and the best bit is that you can bring your bundles of joy along too! There’s no need for a baby-sitter, or to make a long-term commitment to attend as you would at a gym. The added bonus is that it’s a chance to meet and socialize with other mums and get some wonderful fresh air. It’ll certainly blow away those cobwebs!!
When is it?: Every Thursday from 10:30am to 11:30am.
Where is it?: St Andrews Park, Bristol – Meet by the Children’s Play Area.
What does it cost?: Each session costs £6 - Or you can purchase a block of 6 sessions for £30. Payment is payable to the session instructor in cash in advance or on the day of the session.
What should I bring?: Yourself; your baby in a buggy; suitable dress to allow movement i.e. jogging bottoms, a t-shirt and a sweater (layer up as it's sure to be cold to start); drink of water; towel; something waterproof to put on the floor to sit on (a plastic bag would suffice); and money for class payment (and for a post-workout beverage – if you fancy joining some of the other mums afterwards).
What qualifications will the session instructor have?: The session instructor is an Advanced Personal Trainer (REPS level 3) who has studied Pre and Post Natal, and is also a certified nutritional advisor for weight management and physical performance.
Whilst the instructor will make every attempt to answer any questions that you may have about your body post birth, they are not a medical professional. You should ask any medically-related questions of your GP.
I’ve recently given birth – how long should I wait before taking part?: All exercises are suitable for women post-birth, and you are welcome to take part after your 6-8 week GP check for normal deliveries, and on your GP’s recommendation after a caesarean section.
Can I bring my older children along?: Children of any age can come along to The Mummy Workout, so long as they are able to lie or sit in a buggy / pram for the duration of the session.
Do I need a special off-road buggy to take part?: No, we won’t actually be running with buggies and the ground is fairly even. So long as your buggy can travel along grass at a fast-walking pace you’ll be fine.
What if it rains?: It's very unlikely that the session will be cancelled - so bring along a waterproof coat!
